Ideal Hose Clamp Size Chart

Hose clamps are used to hold and seal hoses and tubing to pipes and fittings. Worm drive hose clamps are popular because they are adjustable, simple to use, and don’t require any special tools to install or remove—all you need is a screwdriver, nut driver, or socket wrench.

A captive screw or worm gear has slots in the band and is adjusted to change the clamp’s diameter over a specific range. You can fully open the band to allow hose clamps to be fitted on already installed hoses and tubing. You’ll find uses for such fasteners outside hose applications.

Hose clamps, also known as worm drive clamps, worm gear clamps, and worm screw clamps, are reusable. There are many sizes, and measuring them, you’ll find some you’ll never use as they are too large or not suitable as they are too small. In our guide, you can use the included charts to find the minimum clamp diameter and a maximum diameter of the stainless steel band you need.

By the end, you can see that changing a hose clamp on your car engine, or in confined places, will be far more manageable when you can pick the small size or large stainless steel band you can tighten with the least number of turns. (Read Scooter Drive Belt Size Chart)

How Do I Know What Size Hose Clamp I Need?

Hose clamp size refers to the clamping diameter range, defined in inches as a minimum and maximum usable diameter; specific clamps are also shown by their SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) size.

  1. Install the hose or tube on the fitting or pipe.
  2. To establish the size required, measure the outside diameter of the hose and select a clamp that fits that diameter from the middle of the range.
  3. To convert circumference to diameter, divide the installed outer circumference of the hose by 3.14 (pi).

The ideal hose clamp size chart can be found here.

The two primary elements are represented in the table. The diameter range is the first, and the types accessible are the second.

Size, minimum, and maximum for inches and millimeters can be found in the diameter range.

Standard, all-stainless, and silicone clamps are among the types. The table shows all of the most often used sizes, allowing you to pick the correct hose clamp for various applications.

There are larger hose clamps sizes available, but they are rarely used and are not considered standard.

Remember that the measurements are in inches and millimeters, so check the column of any spring hose clamp size chart.

Standard Hose Clamp

The standard series of hose clamps is the most common and can be found in automotive and industrial applications.

  • The smallest clamp has a diameter of 3/8″ while the largest has a diameter of approximately 8 7/16″.
  • The screws are 5/16″ slotted hex head, and the bands are 1/2″ wide. With these clamps, SAE torque criteria are met or surpassed.

Miniature Hose Clamp

Miniature series hose clamps are used to clamp small diameter hoses and tubing, such as air, fluid, and fuel lines.

  • The smallest is 7/32″ in diameter, while the largest is about 1 3/4″. With a 1/4″ slotted hex head screw, the bands are 5/16″ wide. They can be fitted in tight spaces because of their small size.

Worm drive or worm gear hose clamps are the most common hose clamps. Clamps typically have a 1/2″ broad band and a 5/16″ slotted hex head screw. Soft/silicone hoses and tubes should not be used. (Read Spark Plug Sizes Socket Guide)

The hose clamps adhere to the ANSI/SAE J 1670 standard, which calls for “Type F clamps for plumbing applications.”
